Newland BS80 troubleshooting: lights, pairing and data

CauseWhile the BS80 is paired with one device, others cannot find it. A slow blue flash with long off phases means it is not discoverable; long on phases mean it is.

Fix

1. Press Delete/Reset and Function together. This removes the old pairing and makes the scanner discoverable.
2. On the PC, phone or tablet, remove any old BS80XXXX entry from the Bluetooth list.
3. Switch off power-saving mode on the phone or tablet.
4. Pair again and select BS80XXXX. The Function LED turns steady blue when connected.
5. If it still fails, your app may need another profile. Scan Enter Setup, Bluetooth HID (or Bluetooth SPP / Bluetooth BLE) and Exit Setup, then pair again.

CauseBy default the scanner switches off after 30 minutes without use. Range (up to 50 m in open space, less through walls) and power saving on the host also matter.

Fix

1. Hold Scan/Power for 3 seconds to switch the scanner on again and wait for the steady blue Function LED.
2. Change the timer in chapter 5, section "Auto Power-Off Timeout", or disable auto power-off.
3. Turn off power-saving mode on the host device.
4. If you often walk out of range, use Automatic Batch Mode (chapter 5, "Batch Mode"). Scans made out of range are then stored and sent later.

CauseA flashing red Data LED means scans are stored in memory, usually because batch mode is on. Or the scanner is in the wrong mode: with the cable it must be in USB mode (Function LED red). Over Bluetooth SPP or BLE only apps built for that profile receive data.

Fix

1. Check the Function LED. To switch between Bluetooth and USB mode, hold Scan/Power and Function together for 3 seconds, as the user guide describes; if the LED does not change, check the quick start sheet. Do not use Delete/Reset for this.
2. To send stored scans, connect the scanner and hold Function for 3 seconds (or scan Transmit Stored Data in Manual Batch Mode).
3. If you do not want batch mode, scan Enter Setup, Off in chapter 5, section "Batch Mode", and Exit Setup.
4. For typing into any app, use Bluetooth HID or, with the cable, USB HID Keyboard (chapter 4).

CauseThe scanner types for a U.S. English keyboard by default. With another layout on the host, some keys produce other characters or are skipped. Some hosts also drop characters that arrive too fast.

Fix

1. On phones and tablets, set the device keyboard to English (US), as Newland advises.
2. On a PC, scan the matching keyboard country from chapter 4, section "USB Country Keyboard Types": Finland (Swedish), Poland or Czechoslovakia.
3. For Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian layouts there is no entry. Scan Emulate ALT+Keypad ON instead (section "Emulate ALT+Keypad").
4. If characters go missing, scan Long Delay (40ms) in section "Inter-Keystroke Delay", or a higher value under "Polling Rate".

Start each with Enter Setup and end with Exit Setup. Details: BS80 programming.

CauseNo terminating character (Enter or Tab) is set, or suffixes are switched off.

Fix

1. Open chapter 8, section "Terminating Character Suffix", of the user guide.
2. Scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character to CR (0x0D), Enable Terminating Character Suffix and Exit Setup.
3. Test in Notepad. If nothing changed, scan Enter Setup, Enable All Prefixes/Suffixes (chapter 8, section "Global Settings") and Exit Setup.

For Tab instead of Enter, follow the steps in BS80 programming.

CauseFlashing red with beeps means the battery is low. Red and green alternating means the battery is not detected.

Fix

1. Connect the USB-C cable to a PC or USB power adapter, or set the scanner in its cradle. The LED is red while charging and green when full; a full charge takes 3 to 4 hours.
2. If the LED does not light, try another cable and USB port. Charge between 0 and 45 °C, as Newland specifies.
3. If red and green keep flashing alternately, the battery is not detected. Contact us with the scanner's serial number from the product label.

CauseThe 1 MB memory is full. In Manual Batch Mode, sent scans stay in memory unless auto clear is on.

Fix

1. Connect the scanner, click into the target field and hold Function for 3 seconds to send the stored data.
2. Once the data has arrived, scan Enter Setup, Clear All Stored Data (chapter 5, section "Query/Clear Stored Data in Flash") and Exit Setup. This deletes every stored scan.
3. To empty it automatically after each transfer, switch on "Auto Clear Stored Data after Transmission" (chapter 5).

CauseProgramming bar codes only work after Enter Setup. Other causes: the protective film, a code the model cannot read (the 1D model NLS-BS8080-1D reads no QR or Data Matrix codes), or earlier settings.

Fix

1. Remove the protective film from the scan window.
2. Hold the scanner at a different distance; Newland gives 5 to 20 cm as the optimum for the 2D model.
3. For a programming bar code, scan Enter Setup first.
4. If nothing helps, scan Enter Setup, Restore All Factory Defaults (chapter 3, section "Default Settings") and Exit Setup, then set up your keyboard and suffix again.
