In this guide

This guide covers the settings most HR23 users change: the keyboard country, Enter or Tab after each scan, phone-screen reading and the reset to factory defaults. Every bar code is named as it appears in Newland's HR23 Dorada Corded User Guide or HR23 Dorada BT User Guide. The two guides use different chapter numbers, so each step names both.

    How programming works

    1. Scan Enter Setup. The scanner now accepts programming bar codes.
    2. Scan one or more setting bar codes.
    3. Scan Exit Setup. Scanning a normal bar code or restarting the scanner also ends setup.

Some settings need a value. You then scan the setting, the characters from "Digit Barcodes" in the appendix, and Save from "Save/Cancel Barcodes". You can scan the bar codes from paper or from a monitor.

Setting Corded user guide Bluetooth user guide
Keyboard country, Emulate ALT+Keypad, Code Page Chapter 5, USB Interface (p. 66–72) Chapter 4, Wireless Communication (p. 37–44)
Scanning Preference, Smart Stand Mode, Default Settings Chapter 3, System Settings (p. 43–54) Chapter 3, System Setting (p. 25–32)
    Terminating Character Suffix Chapter 7, Prefix & Suffix (p. 215) Chapter 7, Prefix & Suffix (p. 255)

Check the keyboard layout on the PC

The HR23 types like a keyboard and assumes a U.S. layout. If Windows uses another layout, some characters come out wrong, often symbols such as - / or @. Select the input language icon on the Windows taskbar to see the active layout, or open Settings › Time & language › Language & region in Windows 11. The Windows defaults for our markets are Estonian, Latvian (Standard), Lithuanian, Finnish, Polish (Programmers) and Czech.

    Set the keyboard country

    1. Open section "USB Country Keyboard Types": chapter 5 in the corded guide, chapter 4 in the Bluetooth guide. On the Bluetooth model the setting applies both through the cradle and in Bluetooth HID mode.
    2. Scan Enter Setup, the entry from the table below, then Exit Setup.
    3. In Notepad, scan a bar code with letters, digits and symbols and compare the result with the text printed under it.
Market Windows default layout Corded HR23 Bluetooth HR23
Estonia Estonian None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad (next step) None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad
Latvia Latvian (Standard) None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad
Lithuania Lithuanian None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad None: use Emulate ALT+Keypad
Finland Finnish Finland (Swedish) Finland (Swedish)
Poland Polish (Programmers) Poland(Programmer) Poland, then test
Czechia Czech Czechoslovakia, then test Czechoslovakia, then test
Any US U.S. (English), the default U.S. (English), the default

The corded guide also lists Czech(Programmer) for PCs set to the Czech Programmers layout. Newland does not say which Windows layout its Poland, Czechoslovakia and Finland (Swedish) entries are based on, so the test in step 3 matters. If characters are still wrong, use Emulate ALT+Keypad.

    Tip

If a character does not exist on the selected keyboard, the scanner leaves it out. Scan Beep on Unknown Character (section "Beep on Unknown Character") while you test, so that you hear when this happens.

If your layout is missing: Emulate ALT+Keypad

With this setting the scanner types each character as an Alt code on the numeric keypad and ignores the keyboard country. Windows then produces the right character whatever layout is active. Typing takes a little longer, because each character needs several key presses.

    1. Scan Enter Setup.
    2. In section "Emulate ALT+Keypad", scan Emulate ALT+Keypad ON.
    3. Section "Code Page": if your bar codes contain national letters, scan the code page they were created with, for example Code Page 1257 (Baltic) or Code Page 1250 (Central and East European Latin). The default is Code Page 1252 (West European Latin).
    4. Section "Unicode Encoding": Newland recommends Off (the default) for Notepad and Excel and On for Word.
    5. Scan Exit Setup and test in the program you actually use.

Add Enter or Tab after each scan

Newland calls the key after the data the terminating character, in chapter 7, section "Terminating Character Suffix". Both user guides mark it as enabled with CR (Enter) by default, but Disable All Prefixes/Suffixes is also a default, and the corded factory defaults table lists the terminating character as disabled. So test first: scan two codes into Notepad. If each lands on a new line, Enter is already sent.

    • Enter: scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character to CR (0x0D), Enable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup.
    • Tab: scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character Suffix, the digits 0 and 9 from "Digit Barcodes" in the appendix, Save, Enable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup.
    • Nothing: scan Enter Setup, Disable Terminating Character Suffix, Exit Setup.

Prefer CR to Set Terminating Character to CRLF (0x0D,0x0A) in keyboard mode: Newland's key mapping table sends LF as a Down Arrow press. If Enter is still missing, scan Enter Setup, Enable All Prefixes/Suffixes (chapter 7, "Global Settings", p. 202 corded, p. 216 Bluetooth) and Exit Setup. Prefixes you have not switched on individually stay off.

    Read codes from phone screens

Codes on paper read best with the default setting. If you mostly scan QR codes, tickets or vouchers from phone screens, change chapter 3, section "Scanning Preference": scan Enter Setup, then Mobile Mode on the corded HR23 or Screen Mode on the Bluetooth HR23, then Exit Setup.

Aztec Code, used on some travel tickets, is off by default on both versions. Scan Enter Setup, Enable Aztec Code (symbologies chapter, p. 188 corded, p. 172 Bluetooth) and Exit Setup if you need it.

In the stand or cradle, Smart Stand Mode (chapter 3, default on) makes the scanner read automatically. Scan Off in that section if you prefer to use the trigger there too.

    Restore factory defaults

    1. Open chapter 3, section "Default Settings".
    2. Scan Enter Setup, then Restore All Factory Defaults on the corded HR23 (p. 54), or Reset Scanner on the Bluetooth HR23 (p. 32).
    3. Set the keyboard country and the terminating character again if you use them.

If you set up several scanners the same way, save your configuration with Save as Custom Defaults. Restore All Custom Defaults then returns to it, and a factory reset does not delete it. Newland's EasySet software for Windows can also read, change and save the HR23 configuration over RS-232, USB CDC or HID POS, not in keyboard mode.

For connecting and pairing, see our HR23 setup guide. For scanners that read but type wrongly, see the HR23 troubleshooting guide. All guides are on our HR23 Dorada page.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Newland HR23 support an Estonian keyboard?

No. Its list has no Estonian, Latvian or Lithuanian entry. Use Emulate ALT+Keypad ON, which works with any Windows layout.

Which keyboard entry do I use for Polish Windows?

On the corded HR23 scan Poland(Programmer), which matches the Windows default Polish (Programmers) by name. The Bluetooth HR23 only lists Poland, so test it and switch to Emulate ALT+Keypad if characters are wrong.

How do I make the HR23 press Enter after a scan?

Scan Enter Setup, Set Terminating Character to CR (0x0D), Enable Terminating Character Suffix and Exit Setup. If Enter is still missing, also scan Enable All Prefixes/Suffixes.

How do I reset the HR23 to factory settings?

Scan Enter Setup and then Restore All Factory Defaults (corded) or Reset Scanner (Bluetooth) from chapter 3, section "Default Settings".
