In this guide

Most problems show up as a beep pattern or an LED colour. Pages refer to the DS36X8 Product Reference Guide (PRG); common bar codes are also in the DS3608 and DS3678 Quick Start Guides.

    Fixes

    1. Scanner shows no sign of lifeNo aiming dot, no beep

CauseThe DS3608 gets no power over its cable, or the DS3678 battery is flat or not yet activated.

    Fix

    1. DS3608: check that the connector sits flush in the handle and the lock plate is closed. Try another USB port.
    2. DS3678: check that the battery door is locked, then put the scanner in the powered cradle. New batteries ship switched off and turn on only in the cradle.
    2. Some bar codes do not readAiming dot on, no decode beep

CauseThe bar code type is switched off, the code is damaged, or the distance is wrong.

    Fix

    1. Try a clean sample of the same type. If that reads, the label is the problem.
    2. Check that the type is enabled: PRG chapter "Symbologies" (defaults from p. 13-2).
    3. White bars on a dark background: see section "Inverse 1D" (p. 13-70). Codes on phone screens: scan Enhanced in Hand-held Mode in section "Mobile Phone/Display Mode" (p. 6-33).
    4. Aim the dot at the centre of the code, closer for small codes and further away for large ones. Labels on high racks need an ER or XR model.
    3. Scanner beeps, but no data arrivesNothing on screen, or four long low beeps

CauseNo text field has focus, wrong host type, a loose cable, or the DS3678 is not paired.

    Fix

    1. Scan into Notepad. If the data appears there, check your software.
    2. Four long low beeps mean a transmission error. Scan USB Keyboard (HID) from the quick start guide (in the PRG USB HID Keyboard, section "USB Device Type", p. 8-6).
    3. Check that all cables sit firmly. DS3678: scan the pairing bar code on the cradle.
    4. Cradle lost the PC? In this order: unplug the power supply, unplug the host cable, wait three seconds, reconnect the host cable, then the power supply, and pair again.
    5. Low/high/low beeps mean an invalid Advanced Data Formatting (ADF) rule. Check it in 123Scan.
    4. Wrong characters on screenY and Z swapped, letters instead of digits

CauseThe scanner and Windows use different keyboard layouts, or Caps Lock is on.

    Fix

    1. Scan the keyboard type that matches the Windows layout, for example Estonian, in PRG Appendix B (p. B-2 to B-14). Our setup guide lists the entries for the Baltic, Finnish, Polish and Czech layouts.
    2. If your layout is not listed, scan Disable Quick Keypad Emulation (p. 8-12). Enable Keypad Emulation (p. 8-11) is on by default.
    3. For case problems, turn off Caps Lock or scan USB - Override Caps Lock Key (Enable) from the quick start guide.
    5. Enter missing or doubledCursor stays put, or skips a field

CauseThe scanner sends no suffix, or both the scanner and your software add an Enter.

    Fix

    1. To add Enter, scan Add Enter Key (Carriage Return/Line Feed) (PRG section "Add an Enter Key", p. 6-41). For Tab, scan Add a Tab Key from the quick start guide.
    2. To remove the suffix, scan Data As Is in section "Scan Data Transmission Format" (p. 6-44).
    6. DS3678 does not pairLong low, long high beep

CauseThe scanner is not seated, is set to connect directly to a PC or phone, or the cradle is locked to another scanner.

    Fix

    1. Insert the scanner top first and press the handle down until it clicks, or scan the pairing bar code on this cradle. Wait for the low/high beep before scanning anything else.
    2. Scanner used directly with a PC or phone before: scan Cradle-Classic or Cradle-Low Energy (section "Radio Communications Host Types", p. 5-5), then insert it.
    3. By default a cradle serves one scanner. For up to seven, the first scanner scans Multipoint-to-Point Mode (p. 5-35). If someone set Locked Pairing Mode, scan Lock Override (p. 5-37), then the pairing bar code.
    7. DS3678 loses the connectionScans fail far from the cradle

CauseThe scanner is out of radio range, or racks, walls and Wi-Fi interfere.

    Fix

    1. Zebra quotes at least 100 m in open air. Metal racking shortens this: move closer.
    2. In busy Wi-Fi areas, see PRG section "Wi-Fi Friendly Mode" (p. 5-13).
    3. A blinking red radio LED means the scanner is trying to reconnect. To keep scans made out of range, scan Out of Range Batch Mode (section "Batch Mode", p. 5-45).
    8. DS3678 does not charge or runs down fastCradle LED amber fast blinking

CausePoor contact, wrong temperature, a damp battery, weak USB power or a worn battery.

    Fix

    1. Amber fast blinking means a charging error. Reseat the scanner until it clicks.
    2. Charge only between 0 and 40 °C, and never charge a damp or wet battery: let a scanner from the freezer warm up and dry first.
    3. On USB power alone a full charge takes up to 10 hours.
    4. A red cradle LED, blinking while charging or steady when full, means the battery has reached end of life. Replace it.
    9. Scan window fogs up in cold storesPoor reads after leaving a freezer

CauseCondensation forms on the cold scan window in warm air.

    Fix

    1. Wipe the window dry with a soft, clean cloth.
    2. For regular freezer work, Zebra recommends a heated scanner holder.

    Reset to factory defaults

    1. Scan Return to Factory Defaults in the quick start guide, or Set Factory Defaults in PRG section "Default Parameters" (p. 6-5). Restore Defaults on that page returns to custom defaults if someone saved them.
    2. Set Enter and the keyboard layout again as in our DS3608 and DS3678 setup guide.
    3. DS3678: if it does not reconnect, insert it in the cradle.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I factory reset a Zebra DS3608 or DS3678?

Scan Return to Factory Defaults in the quick start guide of your model, or Set Factory Defaults in the PRG. Then set Enter and the keyboard layout again.

What do four long low beeps mean on a DS3678?

A transmission error: the scanner read the code but could not send it. Check the host type and the pairing.

Why does my DS3678 battery not charge?

Check that it clicks into the cradle and that the temperature is between 0 and 40 °C. Fast amber blinking means a charging error; red means the battery is worn out.
