In this guide

The QuickScan QD2200 and QW2520 are Datalogic's entry-level corded scanners. Both plug into a USB port and type each barcode into the active program, like a keyboard, without a driver. This guide connects the cable, checks the interface, makes the first scan and sets up the stand from the kit.

    You'll need

    Before you start

    Which scanner do you have

    QD2200 (QD2220-BKK1S) QW2520 (QW2520-BKK1S)
Type Corded 1D linear imager Corded 2D area imager (640 × 480 pixels)
Reads 1D barcodes only, such as EAN, UPC, Code 128 and Code 39 1D and 2D barcodes, such as QR Code, Data Matrix and PDF417
Aiming Red scan line Blue aiming light
    In the box Scanner, 2 m USB-A cable (90A052065), collapsible stand/holder (STD-QW25-BK) Scanner, 2 m USB-A cable (90A052258), collapsible stand/holder (STD-QW25-BK)

The kit contents are as Datalogic lists them for the two part numbers. Contact us at once if anything is missing or damaged. Both scanners use the same programming method: you scan setup barcodes from the QRG or PRG, or change the settings in Datalogic Aladdin on a PC.

Connect the cable to the scanner

The USB cable plugs into the scanner's handle and locks with a small clip. The handle also has a small hole, the cable release hole: on the front of the handle on the QD2200, on the bottom on the QW2520.

    1. Hold the cable connector so that its clip is on the same side as the release hole.
    2. Push the connector into the handle until it clicks. The click means it is locked.
    3. Pull gently on the cable to check that it holds.

    Removing the cable

Unplug the cable from the PC first. Press a straightened paper clip into the release hole to free the clip, then pull the connector out. Datalogic suggests a straight staple for the QD2200. Don't pull the cable out without releasing the clip.

Plug the scanner into the PC

    1. Plug the other end of the cable into a USB-A port on the PC or POS terminal.
    2. The scanner gives four high beeps at power-up. Its light blinks until the PC has recognised the USB device.
    3. Windows installs the scanner as a keyboard on its own. You don't need a driver for keyboard mode.

Datalogic states that the QD2200 detects the USB cable and starts as a USB keyboard. For the QW2520, USB keyboard is the default interface in the QRG.

Check the interface (only if needed)

Keyboard mode suits almost every program: scans appear wherever the cursor is. Change the interface only if your software asks for something else.

    • Back to keyboard mode: scan Select USB Keyboard from the "Interface Selection" section of your QRG. The PRGs call it Select USB Standard Keyboard.
    • Virtual COM port: scan Select USB-COM-STD and install the Datalogic USB-COM driver, which Datalogic offers on its website.
    • POS systems with special USB modes: USB HID POS, USB-OEM and others are in the PRG. Use them only when your POS supplier asks for them.
    Important

Interface barcodes need one scan only. Do not scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE before them. All other settings in this guide start and end with ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE.

    Make your first scan

    1. Open Notepad or another text editor and click in the window.
    2. Aim at a barcode and pull the trigger.
    3. With the QD2200, lay the red line across the whole barcode, from the first bar to the last. With the QW2520, centre the aiming light on the code; a 2D imager reads in any orientation.
    4. Move closer or further away until the scanner reads. Small codes read best close up, large codes from further away.
    5. A good read gives one beep, the green light on top of the scanner and Datalogic's Green Spot, a green light projected onto the barcode.
    6. Check the text in Notepad. If the cursor jumps to the next line, the scanner sent Enter after the barcode.
Typical reading distance (Datalogic) QD2200 QW2520
EAN-13, 13 mil (standard retail barcode) 10–680 mm 10–400 mm
Code 39, 5 mil (small, dense barcode) 10–300 mm 5–230 mm
QR Code, 20 mil Not supported (1D only) 10–330 mm

Letters, digits or symbols come out wrong? The scanner uses a US keyboard layout by default, while your PC probably uses an Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Polish or Czech one. The fix is in QD2200 and QW2520 programming, together with Tab instead of Enter and the reset barcodes.

    Set up the stand

Both kits include Datalogic's collapsible stand/holder (STD-QW25-BK). You can use it in two ways:

    • As a holder: the scanner rests in the stand between scans, and you lift it and pull the trigger as usual. No setting is needed.
    • Hands-free: the stand holds the scanner at an angle and you present items to it. For this the scanner needs a different Scan Mode, because it does not detect the stand on its own.

    Switch on hands-free scanning

    • QD2200: in the QRG's "Scan Mode" section, scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, Stand Mode (in the PRG: Scan Mode = Stand Mode), then ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE again. The scanner then reads as soon as an item enters its field of view, without the trigger. The QD2200 PRG adds that the QuickScan 2500 stands, including the Autosense stands, also fit the QD2200, but their auto-sense function is not active on this model.
    • QW2520: scan the single barcode Scan Mode = Stand Mode/Object Detection in the QRG's hands-free stand section. The aiming light stays on, and the scanner switches on its red illumination and reads when it detects movement.

To go back to normal trigger scanning, scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE, Trigger Single (the default Scan Mode), and ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE from the Scan Mode section of your QRG.

    Tip

The QD2200 QRG also lists Trigger Object Sense. It works like Stand Mode, but the scanner reads only after a trigger pull. It can help at a busy counter where items pass the stand that should not be scanned.

Fine-tune the settings with Aladdin (optional)

Datalogic Aladdin is Datalogic's free configuration program. It shows the scanner's settings on screen, so you change them on the PC instead of scanning barcodes one by one. It also sets the good-read light and beeper and can install firmware updates. Download it from the Datalogic software downloads page. Aladdin is the easiest way to give several scanners the same settings.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need a driver for the Datalogic QD2200 or QW2520?

No. In the default USB keyboard mode Windows installs the scanner as a keyboard. A driver is needed only for the USB-COM interface.

Can the QD2200 read QR codes?

No. The QD2200 is a 1D linear imager and reads only 1D barcodes. For QR codes and other 2D codes, use the QW2520.

Does the scanner switch to hands-free mode when I put it in the stand?

No. With the collapsible stand from the kit you scan a Scan Mode barcode first: Stand Mode on the QD2200, Scan Mode = Stand Mode/Object Detection on the QW2520.

    Can I replace the cable?

Yes. The cable is removable with a paper clip in the release hole. Datalogic sells straight and coiled USB cables, including USB-C versions, for these scanners.
