Honeywell PC42E-T and PC42E-D troubleshooting: lights and fixes

What the Status LED and PC42E-D indicators mean, and how to fix red lights, ribbon errors, blank or skipped labels, faded print and resets.

    The PC42E-T and PC42E-D have no display. They report their state with the Status LED; the PC42E-D adds Supplies, Pause and Network indicators.

    What the lights mean

    Status LED Meaning
    Solid green Ready, waiting for a job
    Blinking green Starting up or receiving data. Slow blinking in peel-off mode: remove the printed label
    Solid amber PC42E-T: printhead too hot, wait until it cools
    Blinking amber Firmware update from a USB stick. Slow blinking: missing font or print outside the printable area
    Blinking red Error: media or ribbon out, printhead lifted, label in the path, ribbon in direct thermal mode, or no calibration done
    Red and green alternating Hardware fault, the printer needs service
    Off No power

    PC42E-D indicators: Supplies blinking amber means media low, red means media out. Pause amber means the printer is paused; blinking red together with a blinking red Status LED means the printhead is too hot. Network green means Ethernet or strong Wi-Fi, blinking green a weak Wi-Fi signal or data transfer, red a network fault.

    Fixes

    1. Status LED blinks redMedia out, printhead lifted or label in the way

    CauseThe printer is in error mode.

    Fix

    1. Open the cover. If the roll is empty, load a new one.
    2. Remove any label stuck in the label path, without sharp tools.
    3. Press the print and ribbon mechanism down until both locking tabs click and close the cover. On the PC42E-T, press Print to continue; the PC42E-D resumes on its own.
    4. Still red with labels loaded: calibrate (hold the print button for 2 seconds).
    5. "Printhead Lifted" with the mechanism closed (PC42E-T): check that the round white sticker is on the right side of the print and ribbon mechanism.
    2. Ribbon problems (PC42E-T)Red light with ribbon loaded, or ribbon out

    CauseRibbon used up or loaded wrongly, or print method set to direct thermal.

    Fix

    1. Check that there is ribbon left on the roll and that its end is fixed to the take-up core.
    2. Use only ink-out (coated side out) ribbon, with the inked side facing the labels under the printhead.
    3. Check the ribbon core switch: outwards for 0.5 in cores, inwards for 1 in cores or a ribbon adapter.
    4. With a ribbon loaded, set Configure › Printing › Media › Print Method to thermal transfer on the web page, or in your software. For direct thermal labels, remove the ribbon.
    3. Labels come out blankThe printer feeds, but nothing is printed

    CauseLabels upside down, or labels that need a ribbon.

    Fix

    1. Scratch the printable side with a fingernail. A black mark means direct thermal: this side must face the printhead.
    2. No mark: the labels need a ribbon. On the PC42E-T, load one and set the print method to thermal transfer; the PC42E-D can't print them.
    4. Labels skip or the printer keeps feedingPrint lands across two labels, or blank labels in between

    CauseMissing calibration, wrong sensor position or label size, or a stuck label.

    Fix

    1. Open the printer, remove any label stuck at the label gap sensor and clean the printhead.
    2. Slide the media sensor tab to gap, black mark or cloth tag and other media, to match your labels.
    3. Set the exact label size in the driver and in your label software.
    4. Calibrate: hold the print button for 2 seconds. If it still skips, switch ECO off for slow calibration and calibrate again.

    5. Faded, patchy or partial printWeak print, white lines or only part of the label

    CauseDirty printhead, low darkness, unsuitable ribbon or an unlocked mechanism.

    Fix

    1. Press the print and ribbon mechanism down until both locking tabs click.
    2. Clean the printhead: switch off and unplug, remove media and ribbon, slide a cleaning card under the printhead, lower the mechanism, pull the card out and wait about 30 seconds. Wipe residue off the platen roller with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
    3. Increase Darkness (1–100) under Configure › Printing › Print Quality on the web page, or in your label software.
    4. PC42E-T: use a ribbon whose coating suits the label material.
    6. Nothing printsLED off, or green but no label comes out

    CausePower, cable, driver or network.

    Fix

    1. LED off: check the power switch, the power supply's green LED and both power connections.
    2. LED green: reconnect the interface cable at both ends and check the printer and port in Windows.
    3. Network: print a configuration label (hold the print button for about 6 seconds). If the IP address shows 0.0.0.0, wait 10 seconds and print another. On the PC42E-D, a red Network indicator means an Ethernet or Wi-Fi fault.
    4. Reinstall Honeywell's InterDriver (see the PC42E setup guide).
    7. Amber light, or red and green alternatingDepends on the pattern

    Fix

    1. Solid amber (PC42E-T) or Pause and Status blinking red (PC42E-D): the printhead is too hot. Let it cool; on the PC42E-D, restart the printer afterwards.
    2. Blinking amber with a USB stick inserted: a firmware update is running. Remove the stick when the LED is solid green.
    3. Slow amber blinking: check the label design for a missing font or objects outside the printable area.
    4. Red and green alternating: a hardware fault. Contact us for service.
    8. Reset to factory defaultsRestore the default settings

    CauseUntraceable settings. A reset can clear network settings, so note them first.

    Fix with the button (PC42E-T user guide)

    1. Switch the printer off and open the cover.
    2. Press the top of both locking tabs to open the print and ribbon mechanism.
    3. Switch the printer on. When the Status LED starts blinking green, press and hold Print until the LED goes off.
    4. Check the media, close the print and ribbon mechanism and the cover, then calibrate again.

    On the web page, go to Services › Restore Defaults, select Network settings, User-Installed Files and/or System Settings, click Restore and confirm. PrintSet has a Factory Default Wizard. The PC42E-D quick start guide describes no button reset; on that model use PrintSet or the web page (path from the PC42E-T guide).

    Frequently asked questions

    Why is the light on my Honeywell PC42E-T blinking red?

    It is in error mode: usually media or ribbon out, the printhead open or a label in the way. Fix the cause and press Print; if labels are loaded, calibrate.

    How do I reset a Honeywell PC42E-T to factory settings?

    Switch off, open the print mechanism, switch on and hold Print when the LED starts blinking green until it goes off. Or use Services › Restore Defaults on the web page.

    Why does my PC42E print blank labels?

    Direct thermal labels are upside down, or the labels need a ribbon, which only the PC42E-T can use.
