Install the ZDesigner driver on Windows 11 for the Zebra ZT411

Windows needs Zebra's ZDesigner driver to print to the ZT411 correctly. Install it before you connect the printer, and Windows matches the printer to the right driver the first time.

You'll need
  • A Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC
  • Administrator rights on that PC
  • A USB cable, or the printer's IP address for a network connection
  • Your printer's resolution (203, 300 or 600 dpi)

Before you start

Choose the right driver version

Zebra's ZT411 support page lists Windows Printer Driver v10 as recommended and v8 as an alternative. Use v10 unless your software specifically requires v8. Driver v5 is meant for older printers without Link-OS, and the ZT411 is a Link-OS printer.

Zebra's v10 release notes confirm support for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, and for the ZT411 at 203, 300 and 600 dpi. Zebra has released newer v10 builds since, so always download the current one rather than an old copy from a shared drive.

Find your printer's resolution

The part number on the sticker below the media hanger shows the resolution. The digit after "ZT411" is 2 for 203 dpi, 3 for 300 dpi or 6 for 600 dpi. For example, ZT41142-… is 203 dpi and ZT41143-… is 300 dpi.

Important

Don't connect the USB cable yet. If the printer is already plugged in, unplug it until the installer asks for it. If an older ZDesigner driver is installed, uninstall it first.

Download the driver from Zebra

  1. Open the Zebra ZT411 support page (or go to zebra.com/drivers, choose Printers and then your model).
  2. Open the Drivers section and download Windows Printer Driver v10.

Run the installer

  1. Run the downloaded .exe file with administrator rights.
  2. Choose Configure System when asked, and keep the option to run the Printer Installation Wizard switched on. You can also start the wizard later with PrnInst.exe in the extracted driver folder.
  3. In the wizard, choose Install Printer Driver and accept the licence.

Choose the port and your printer

The wizard asks how the printer connects: Network, USB, Bluetooth or Other. Then choose the ZT411 at the resolution you noted earlier.

USB

  1. Choose USB port.
  2. When the wizard starts scanning, remove the label that covers the printer's USB port, connect the cable to the printer and the PC, and switch the printer on. If the printer was already connected, unplug the cable and plug it in again.
  3. Give the printer a name, choose whether it should be your default printer, and click Install.

Network

Connect the printer to your network first and note its IP address. You'll find it on the Printer Info tab of the touch display (see the ZT411 setup guide or ZT411 Wi-Fi setup). Add the printer through the v10 installer first. If that doesn't work, add it manually in Windows:

  1. Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners.
  2. Add a local or network printer with manual settings and create a new port of the type ZDesigner Port Monitor.
  3. Enter the printer's IP address.
  4. Choose ZDesigner and your ZT411 model at the correct dpi.

Print a test page

Open the printer in Printers & scanners and print a test page from its properties. Under Manage › Printing Preferences you'll find the ZDesigner settings window, where you set label size, print method, darkness and speed. Match these to the labels you've loaded, because the driver and your label software can override the printer's own settings.

The test page doesn't print? Print a configuration label straight from the printer: hold FEED + CANCEL for 2 seconds when the printer is Ready. If that works, the problem is on the Windows side.

Fix "Unspecified device" or the wrong driver

If the printer was connected before the driver was installed, Windows lists it as an "Unspecified device" and it won't print properly. You don't need to start over:

  1. Install the ZDesigner driver as above.
  2. Open Control Panel › Devices and Printers.
  3. Right-click the device, choose Properties and open the Hardware tab.
  4. Select the Zebra printer and click Properties › Change settings.
  5. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver, choose to browse your computer for the driver and select the folder with the downloaded driver. Click Next.
Note

Installation stops with error 1224 on Windows 11? Zebra fixed this in driver v10.5.4 for systems with Windows update KB5035845. Download the current v10 from Zebra and run it again.

Frequently asked questions

Which ZDesigner driver should I use for the Zebra ZT411?

Use Windows Printer Driver v10, which Zebra lists as recommended for the ZT411. Driver v8 is the alternative. Driver v5 is for older printers without Link-OS.

Does the ZDesigner driver work on Windows 11?

Yes. Zebra's v10 release notes list 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported, including the ZT411 at 203, 300 and 600 dpi.

Why does my ZT411 show as an Unspecified device?

Check the part number on the sticker below the media hanger. The digit after ZT411 shows the resolution: 2 is 203 dpi, 3 is 300 dpi and 6 is 600 dpi.
